66780 URENA LOBATA [PROCUMBENS] ROSE NEWMAN MAL TGH HP PRICE: $ 5.25 This small shrub collection from China by Robert Newman of one of the "Asian Snowflake Mallows" sports very beautiful lobed leaves of pale ochre dramatically banded in dark green; demure lilac mini-hibiscus blossoms line the stems early winter. Thus a good winter greenhouse or plantroom candidate; while always an excellent foliage plant for summer beds and containers.

40957 VANILLA PLANIFOLIA [FRAGRANS] ORC HP TGH PRICE: $ 12.00 Wide leathery waxy leaves line the thick vining stems; important commercial "Vanilla Orchid" source of the vanilla bean--the yellow-green fls are hard to produce with inadequate light and considerable patience. Sent as URCuttings in dry moss.

40959 VANILLA PLANIFOLIA [FRAGRANS] VARIEGATA ORC HP TGH PRICE: $ 25.00 Irregular bands of green-gold throughout each glossy leaf-- beautiful & vigorous conversation piece of easy house culture--especially if given a moss stuffed pole to gradually climb. Handsome.

40968 VELLOZIA [TALBOTIA] ELEGANS VEL HP TGH PRICE: $ 15.00 Short branching mounds of bright glossy keeled leaves of rich green and delicate nodding Amaryllis-like small blossoms white yet toned pink and green; marvelous native of the Natal. An evergreen gem, exquisite in a Wardian Case design, sometimes called Talbotia elegans. We usually only have five to eight ready per year.

65630 VELTHEIMIA CAPENSIS LIL CGH PRICE: $ 7.25 Fleshy leaved "Cape Cowslip" with stout spikes of tubular pink flowers tipped green emerge from the art noveau rosette of rich toned fleshy leaves, richly undulate along the margins; best let go summer dormant to insure the showy winter blossoms.

83138 VERBENA MABEL DART VER HH HT PRICE: $ 6.00 Purple blue flower clusters similar to "Homestead Purple" enchanced by random splashes on the foliage-be sure to remove reverted sections or they will quickly overwhelm the variegated sections. Use as a dramatic winter greenhouse basket from which to take cuttings for your spring urns, windowboxes, and beds. Variegation often disappears in hot summers and in warm greenhouse conditions.

40971 VIOLA HEDERACEA [ERPETION RENIFORME] VIO HP CGH PRICE: $ 4.00 "Basket Violet" or "Australian Violet" Trailing stems with clumps of rounded leaves and lovely flowers of violet-purple with innocent white eyes. Easy, popular compact candidate for baskets or as a nonaggresive groundcover in your greenhouse; we've even seen it used on large mossed topiaries although a bear blooming with hundreds of violets can be a challenge to the senses! If given a bright location with even moisture and fertilizer, this tropical violet will produce flushes of blooms throughout the year.

51909 VITEX AGNUS CASTUS INCISA [LACELEAF] VER HH HT PRICE: $ 10.00 The lovely "Lace Leaf Hemp Tree" with aromatic woody stems cloaked with finely dissected dark leaves (tomentose beneath); rosy lilac flower panicles. Traditional basket weaving and medicinal "Chase Tree," "Monk's Pepper Tree," "Indian Spice"

54064 VITEX TRIFOLIATA VARIEGATA VER CGH PRICE: $ 15.00 The crinkled leaflets of this "Verbena Tree" are margined in clear bright white--with maturity this beautifully variegated woody slim shrub produces clusters of showy fls. Native to South Asia into Australia, this striking shrub-tree performs well outdoors in the deep subtropical south; nonetheless, it also is quite striking as a container plant in the north, certainly a natural for training into a spectacular standard.

52181 VRIESEA BLEHRI BRO HP CGH PRICE: $ 18.00 Closely clustered elegant small maroon-purple vases, often called "Lobster Claw Bromo" for its mid-winter inflorescenceorescenceorecences: short stalks topped with opposite ranks of miniature pale orange claw-like flowers. Beautiful when grown under lights.

52237 VRIESEA ELOUISE BEACH [HYB] ARAC HP TGH PRICE: $ 25.00 "Striped Urn Plant" Rich glossy green leaves outfurl todisplay thick central ivory white stripes--slow growing beauty which requires bright indirect light for best color. Epiphytic mix necessary. These will be sent as mossed divisions.

52197 VRIESEA SIMPLEX X MARIAE [MAGNIFICA] BRO HP CGH PRICE: $ 18.00 "Painted Feather" Soft glossy nearly transparent soft green vases of leaves blushed maroon beneath form outreach bowls; orange tubular blossoms tipped red rank rich toned "sword" inflorescence on the arched stalk mimicing a Helliconia inflorescence. ***Various other Vriesea species and hybrids are usually available at the saleshouses throughout the year in numbers too small to offer here.

41716 WEDELIA TRILOBATA OUTENREATH GOLD COMP HP CGH PRICE: $ 3.50 "Golden Water Zinnia" A remarkable selection of the very popular hanging basket & groundcover "vine" with striking golden-ocher splashes & slashes on every tri-lobed leaf: most impressive when combined with the yellow daisy fls. Also successful as a groundcover bog plant. This variegated sport was discovered and shared by Gary Outenreath. For reasons known only to them, Parks received this from us and now offers this as "Outerreath Gold"!

69016 WISTERIA FRUTESCENS AMETHYST FALLS LEG HH CGH PRICE: $ 8.50 Remarkable selection of our "Southern Wisteria" this quickly forms heavy bonsai-worthy sinuous trunks with ornate pinnate foliage foiling the beautiful pendant clusters of closely packed blue pea flowers on new growth (not on last season's wood like the rest). Excellent container or tub plant for the cool greenhouse; seems tol be hardy outdoors here as well. Nonetheless if you are growing this in a bonsai or ming pot, the roots should be protected from protracted freezing and thus you would need to stash your dormant Wisteria in a cool corner of your greenhouse or very deep coldframe: and that is why we list this in the tropical plant section.

30437 XANTHOSOMA ATROVIRENS VARIEGATUM MONSTROSUM ARAC TGH PRICE: $ 28.00 "Mouse Cup" "Pocket Plant" Incredibly grotesque bluegreen arrowhead leaves, splashed with white and heavily ridged, are fused at the tip into pockets sporting long surreal tails. Only dormant if temperatures are chill in your winter greenhouse. Likes wet feet during the growth periods.

30863 XANTHOSOMA AUREA LIME ZINGER ARAC TGH PRICE: $ 15.00 Amazing golden arrow leaved aroid forming clumps quickly if given bright light and semi-aquatic conditions. Absolutely the same as Alocasia 'Golden Delicious' but listed here on our website under both names since various reference books and articles are undecided! A considerable number of our customers have told us that this is by far their favorite "Elephant Ear" plant, growing rapidy in a moist bed or adequate container and simply glowing among other plants.

30444 XANTHOSOMA JACQUINII LINEATUM ARAC TGH CGH PRICE: $ 12.50 Crested leaves with whitish striations raised above the arrowhead leaves' surface; unexpectedly easy to grow as is vigorous as any of its similar cousin Colocasias. Very odd 'Monstrose Elephant Ear.' So very complex, so very over the top. So imperative to add to your collection.

30439 XANTHOSOMA LINDENII MAGNIFICUM ARAC TGH HP PRICE: $ 17.50 Very handsome soft green "Aztec Arrowhead" foliage with dramatic wide ivory veins. Needs warm conditions; grows best in a large wardian case or over a pebble tray. Always one of our most sought after plants.

56805 XANTHOSOMA SAGGITIFOLIA ARAC PRICE: $ 18.00 The truely enormous "Giant Elephant Ear" aroid with very decoratively prominate "ears". Evergreen if kept warm; but quite successfully kept dormant in winter along with your Caladium bulbs. Perfect choice as a gift to that particular gardening friend who always wants to boast that "mine is bigger than anyone else's." And yes. You are allowed to give gifts to yourself.

30440 XANTHOSOMA VIOLACEUM ARAC TGH HP PRICE: $ 12.00 "Blue Taro" Purple stems arch into swooping arrowhead leaves of dusky violet darkening to a rich purple toward the margins; this semi-aquatic "Blue Ape" must have warm winter conditions to maintain evergreen foliage; easiest to grow as a semi-aquatic in summer (but very successful as a container companion plant or even planted in a bed with some perfect color companion like 'Lime Zinger'): then store like a dormant "Elephant Ear" during the winter. And like all Colocasias and Xanthosomas, most successfully stored by leaving them in their containers so that their ever so slightly moist undisturbed potting mix is around them all winter to prevent drying out and rot. Nonetheless, reliably evergreen [everpurple] in your winter greenhouse or warm plantroom.

40976 XIPHIDIUM CAERULEUM HAE TGH PRICE: $ 10.00 Fans of purple-stained leaves very sensitive to cold; very odd clusters of cupped white pendant flowers in panicles; this is curiosity known in the West Indies as "Angelhands" and easily makes a transition to a sunny windowsill oddity. We have never understood why zoos order this regularly, yet botanic gardens have never placed a request. A Noah's Ark complex? Nonetheless: Time for you to grow something in the family Haemodoraceae!

40978 ZAMIA FISCHERII ZAM GH PRICE: $12.00 "Fern Leaf Zamia" or "Fish Tail Zamia" Spindle trunks with thin, leathery shiny pinnate leaves giving air of elegance. Mexican native. Often in limited numbers.

41295 ZAMIA PUMILA [FURFURACEA] ZAM GH PRICE: $12.00 "Cardboard Palm" Very handsome golden brown tomentum covers the surface of the oblong hard leaflets on this thick, fat- trunked cycad. Must have sun light to maintain sculptural beauty. Certainly one of the most successful Cycads for small container culture.

30446 ZAMIOCULCAS LANCEOLATA ARAC HP TGH PRICE: $ 8.00 "Aroid Palm" Very thick purpled petioles hold ranks of waxy succulent leaves on outarched thick succulent stems arising from a tuberous root. This elegant plant, now heavily marketed as the "ZZ Palm" is one of the few purely desert aroids. Beware that the leaflets typically shatter when shipped--just tuck them into a rooting mix and each will form a plantlet.

31252ZANTEDESCHIA AETHIOPICA IVORYARAC CGH PRICE: $ 4.50 Fleshy rich green foliage perfect for the large ivory white "Calla Lily" blossoms; best performance in the cool winter greenhouse with ample sun; nonetheless, our customers often grow it in a moist to boggish location in full sun outdoors during the summer and it blooms! Some plants will simply not read the text books (alone read my meandering pronouncements) . . .

30781 ZANTEDESCHIA ROSE GEM ARAC CGG PRICE: $ 7.50 "Purple Calla" Unusual lavender rose spathes; considered a good container subject if kept evenly moist; seems to thrive both as a summer bog subject and as a winter greenhouse bloomer--you set up the cycle you prefer.

50553 ZEBRINA PENDULA DISCOLOR MULTICOLOR COMM HP TGH PRICE: $ 4.50 "Pink Wandering Jew" Broad pinkish-cream & ochre stripes on the glittery leaves with their opulently hued purple reverses. This has always been one of our most ordered variegated plants.

50556 ZEBRINA PENDULA PURPUSII CIN GO CGG PRICE: $ 3.25 Deep pruple foliage--the darkest we have seen--with slight silvery chevrons giving depth to the darkness. Rather smaller foliage than most cultivars.

59394 ZEBRINA PENDULA SILVER PLUS COMM HP TGH PRICE: $ 4.25 A selection of the "Silver Banded Inch Plant" with very showy broad bands of glittery silver on each succulent leaf if grown in very high light. Much more dramatic in baskets and urns than the species form.

51120 ZEPHYRANTHES [ARGYROPSIS] CANDIDA AMARY CGH HP PRICE: $ 4.00 Blunt edged succulent rushlike foliage packed over the nearly surface offsetting bulbs; with full sun and good fertilizer will produce cycles of white flowers (sometimes triggered by a dry cycle followed by heavy pseudo rain). Seed collected in Rio Uruguay, San Javier, Uruguay.

51081 ZEPHYRANTHES GRANDIFLORA AMARY CGH HP PRICE: $ 4.50 Mexican "Zephyr-lily" Rich pink funnel flowers often appear after a rain, thus "Pink Storm Lily." Short grassy foliage on quickly offsetting bulbs near the soil surface; thus perfect in a clay azalea style pot, blooming more freely once the roots become crowded. Give full sun. Winter hardy in the deep South where the bulbs are well below any frost line.

56544 ZINGIBER MIDNIGHT ZIN TGH HP PRICE: $ 6.50 Marvelous "Black Ginger" with arched stems winged with glossy maroon overlapping leaves; the lovely blossoms open creamy yellow gradually changing to peachy apricot. Wonderful color in any plant combination, or as a solo pot plant. If the roots are slightly chilled, or if (not that this could happen) watering schedules are missed, this small ginger will drop its foliage; but never fear for a new fresh set of stems will emerge from the undersoil bulb/tuber and the color will be better than ever.

53042 ZINGIBER ZERUMBET DARCEYI ZIN TGH HP PRICE: $15.00 "Variegated Bitter Ginger" Brilliant white bordered leaves with occassional white bands; turns pink in full light. A winter dormant species from India. As the underground tuber gaines mass as it matures, it will produce its showy flower spike as the new foliage emerges in the spring. Please do not tell us in the Fall that your plant has died. It goes dormant in its native monsoonal climate and it will maintain that cycle no matter what.

53110 ZINGIBER ZERUMBET MIOGA DANCING CRANE [VARIEGATA] ZIN CGH HH PRICE: $ 22.00 Stiff stems cloaked with two ranks of Alpina-like leaves, each centered with a lemon flame whose stripes often reach the leaf margin. Classic Japanese pot subject with yellow basal flowers; always goes dormant late fall and remains so during the winter. If you find this dormant period to be boring, just remember that the tubers are considered edible.
