More BEGONIAS for the 2010 SEASON

Here is the second page of wonderful Begonia hybrids and species. The BEGONIAS remain unrivaled as house & conservatory plants, so much so that demand outstripped our ability to keep up with several of the larger hybrids last season! The codes with each entry below help you identify the overall growing habits of our offerings: (c) indicates cane-stalked "Angelwing" types, (rz) is rhizomatous with sturdy surface stems; (semp) abbreviates sempervirens, the "Wax Begonias," while (s) (sh) stands for shrubby branched types; (t-s) indicates trailing or scandent (climbing) growth habits, and (rex) refers to the brilliantly foliaged "Rex Begonias" with their frustrating dormant spells, while (tuberous) refers to the caudiform group (not the florist/garden center winter dormant types). As this diversity can be bewildering if you do not have access to a plant handbook, fuller descriptions can be found in various of the plant books we offer for sale.

Meanwhile, if you'd like to start with some handsome & dependable selections, plunge in and order our BEGONIA COLLECTION as Stock #99004 to bring you some 5 named plants for a mere PRICE: $15.00.

And many of you with more patience would probably like to try the ANGELWING BEGONIA COLLECTION which is drawn from both species and hybrids as listed here as well as selections from our collections not necessarilly currently listed here as Stock #99686 for 5 cane type Begonias @ PRICE: $17.50.

Please advise us whether you prefer Begonias for your conservatory, light garden, windowsill, terrarium, baskets, or outdoor bedding so we can pick those most likely to flourish in your specific situation. Do NOT specify specific names if ordering a collection--the selection changes nearly every week. If you want a specific species or hybrid, order it individually. We hope to bring back various of our old standbys later this season--but haven't we promised this before? Demand has been considerable of late; resultingly, several stock plants need to regrow before entering a propagation cycle once again. A number of new (to us) selections appear below:

56478 BEGONIA HONEYSUCKLE [HYB] BEG TGH HP PRICE: $ 5.75 Impressive clusters of fragrant salmon-pink dangling blossoms; elegant long angel wing leaves angle out on the stout erect cane stems. Achieves impressive dimensions in time. We do not make claims about the scent, believing that subtle scents reside in the nose of the beholder, not the vendor.

56883 BEGONIA HYDROCOTYLIFOLIA BEG TGH HP PRICE: $ 6.50 (rz) The modest "Mexican Pennywort Begonia" with rounded glossy waxy leaves of a deep green with darker areas along the veins; accented by a pale sinus. Pink blossoms late winter while this species enters a nearly dormant period. This is the very modest "Plain Jane", quite slow-growing parent of the vigorous flashy 'Erythrophylla.'

56061 BEGONIA IMPERIALIS BEG HP TERR PRICE: $ 6.00 (rz) "Carpet Begonia." Procumbent stems hold pebbly bronze and silver-streaked leaves; prefers filtered light, cool location to bring out amber tones; modest white winter blossoms. Mexican classic species--this horticultural selection seems more heat tolerant than other collections of this Mexican montane species we have tested. We cannot ship this species to you during warmer parts of the year unless you realize that the foliage will most likely suffer some damage. Remember that the habit is quite wide spreading, thus a more appropriate candidate for the wardian case than for a less wide terrarium.
56323 BEGONIA INCISA-SERRATA FEL GH PRICE: $ 15.00 (sh) This delicate Begonia is being propagated at this time. Slow growing, incredibly intricate in appearance and in considerable demand by collectors. Perhaps best to suggest inquiries before entering an order. Please email us if you might be interested. Email Us if You Like This Plant

56292 BEGONIA INTREPID [HYB] [HORT] BEG HP CGH PRICE: $ 4.50 (sh caudex) Erect maroon stalks rise from a slowly developing somewhat bulbous base (much larger than the similarly structured 'Little Brother Montgomery') which must not be covered, to present large showy deeply lobed leaves splashed with pewter. Easy: the name reflects its strength although this cultivar seems to be not in the literature, although several collectors have suggested that it might be a silvered selection of or a hybrid of Begonia diadema. The mystery continues.

65342 BEGONIA JOE HAYDEN [HYB] PRICE: $ 4.50 (rz) Very compact glossy deep olive green & mahogany starshaped leaves with ruby red reverse; a reliable Ziesenhene hybrid with pink flowers. LIMITED AVAILABILITY CURRENTLY

56765 BEGONIA JUANITA'S JEWEL [HYB] BEG HP TGH PRICE: $ 10.00 (c) Giant bamboo like canes rigidly ranked with large almost glossy olive angelwing leaves freckled silver, perfect with the dangling clusters of red blossoms. Needs elbow room.

56481 BEGONIA JUMBO JET BEG TGH HP PRICE: $ 12.00 (c) Enormous eggplant colored leaves with black-maroon reverse on arched canes; clusters of winter blossoms.

56899 BEGONIA KENTWOOD [HYB] BEG TGH PRICE: $ 8.25 (c) Impressive tall stalks support not only silvery frosted deely lobed angelwing leaves, richly rouged beneath, but also pendant large clusters of fragrant pearly pink blossoms fading to white--but considerable patience is demanded to grow this to the maturity needed to bloom. Needs good humidity and adeqate light to perform. May be a propagate-to-order item if demand outstrips availability.

56387 BEGONIA KEN'S KANDY [HYB] BEG HP CGH PRICE: $ 6.00 (rz) A well known hybrid by Ken Frieling at the Glasshouse Works. "Celery Stalk" thick blanched erect petioles flare into double Ionic helixes of wide deep olive leaves nearly entirely netted deep chocolate-sienna; very congested habit typical of many recent 'Hocking Hybrid' series. Although most popular as a basic addition to any terrarium design, 'Ken's Kandy' tolerates less than ideal humidity levels, thus it has remained a very popular windowsill subject. Looks terribly complicated and potentially difficult, but this vigorous tuffett is of easy culture.

56270 BEGONIA LACY [HYB] BEG HP CGH PRICE: $ 6.00 (s, semi-tuberous) Attractive frilled dregii foliage and nearly everblooming white fls; seems to have no real dormant cycle.

56767 BEGONIA LAURIE'S LOVE BEG TGH HP PRICE: $ 6.50 (c) Impressive stalks display richly silver speckled angelwing leaves. Easier to establish than most canes.

56019 BEGONIA LAVINIA [HYB] BEG HP TGH PRICE: $ 6.25 (cacudex shrub) From a swollen rootbase arise rose blushed succulent stems flaunting elongated silvery wing leaves with dark veins. A marvelous strong growing Bill Voss hybrid of B. taiwaniana with a rex cultivar.

56877 BEONIA LINDA DAWN [HYB] BEG CGH HP PRICE: $ 6.25 (s, cane) Glossy carmine glazed thin leaves maturing a blood red; bright laquer red beneath, on short cranberry stems. The foliage is thin, thus perfect humidity levels must be maintained to prevent scorching. Lovely shell pink flowers by April.

56522 BEGONIA LISTADA [HYB] BEG HP TGH PRICE: $ 7.75 (shrub/cane) Brazilian "Bronze Angelwing" with fibrous roots & arched thick stems ranked with thick oblique pointed waxy yet haired bronze leaves, each with a cream lined center. Possibly its very similar cultivar or hybrid, 'Magadalen Madsen.' Demand can outstrip availability, so please allow time for us to finish this slow growing beauty if you order it.

56368 BEGONIA LITTLE BROTHER MONTGOMERY [HYB] BEG HP TGH PRICE: $ 6.25 (Caudex Shrub) Stout short trunks present swirled palmate star leaves of silvery toned emerald green veins and edges. Johnson hybrid with pink blossoms over the rex like foliage. Just in case you've neglected this a bit and the foliage fails, never fear for the slightly tuberous base will resprout new stems; conversely, be sure to pot in very easily drained soil in a shallow pot so as to never risk overwatering and thus rotting this tuberous base.

56717 BEGONIA LITTLE MISS MUMMY [HYB] BEG TGH HP PRICE: $ 10.00 [c] Stout short mascara stippled canes ranked with leavy crinkly leaves dotted silver; carmine to blush cassis underleaf.

56282 BEGONIA LOIS BURKS [HYB] BEG CGH HP PRICE: $5.25 (c) Much-branched low-grower with lovely angelwing foliage strewn with silver. The very showy shell pink spring blossoms repeat when given ample light. Easy beautiful basket plant; excellent choice for the windowsill.

56148 BEGONIA LOOKING GLASS [HYB] BEG HP TGH PRICE: $ 5.25 (c)Shiny silver leaves ruffled at margins and veined matte green; reddish beneath. Worley's showiest cane creation--has never been equaled in combining ease of culture with sheer visual impact.

56160 BEGONIA LOPSE II [HYB] BEG HP CGH PRICE: $ 4.00 (upright rz) Late winter white blossoms over the bold upright spiralled heavy leaves, richly textured & pelted; Ziesenhenne creation simply one of the most vigorous, yet stunning ever. The extremely haired leaf surfaces help it survive considerably more exposure to wind and drafts than most of its kith and kin.

56072 BEGONIA MACULATA WIGHTII [HORT] BEG HP CGH PRICE: $ 10.00 Called "Clown Begonia" for the large silver spotted bat-winged leaves held sparcely on tall canes; white flowers. Fantastic visually--but needs absolutely perfect drainage Not for the novice.

56073 BEGONIA MADAME QUEEN [HYB] BEG HP CGH PRICE: $ 12.00 (rz/upright rz) Popular heirloom. This is a simply wonderful big boned gal! Frilled, ruffle-edged, reddish-green leaves, wine red beneath strongly anchored on thick ascending rhizomes; spectacular Bath hybrid with pink flowers. This heritage favorite will test your age: to what famous radio character does the name refer?

56372 BEGONIA MAD HATTER [HYB] BEG HP TGH PRICE: $ 4.75 (rz) Furry nacre green and pinkish (colors of 'Sir Percy') leaves wildly furled to reveal their 'Cathedral' crestings; truly marvelous Logee hybrid with white spring flowers. Smaller statured and far more delicate in appearance than 'Cathedral.'

56082 BEGONIA MAGIC LACE [REX] BEG CGH PRICE: $ 6.75 (rz) Low carpet of beautifully whorled pistachio green leaves highlighted with champagne pewter tones; similar to 'Curly Fascination,' but colors more contrasty, leaf lobes more pointed and far more prostrate. Best grown in a large terrarium.

56090 BEGONIA MARMADUKE [HYB] BEG HP CGH PRICE: $ 6.00 Rounded leaves with rich bronze, emerald and ochre mosaic with rich rusty speckling concentrated at vein junctions, a very dramatic and quite distinctive character reaching considerable stature--often a prize winning impressive specimen at shows.

56077 BEGONIA MASONIANA BEG TERR CGH PRICE: $ 6.50 (rz) "Iron Cross Begonia" Back in stock for the rest of Summer, 2010. Puckered quilted leaf surface with maroon chocolate central cross--the entire bullate leaf being reddish haired. A New Guinea native prefering terrarium humidity where it will produce its clusters of greenish white haired blossoms; not easily grown as a windowsill subject without pebbletray culture. Never give up if the "Iron Cross" foliage suddenly dries and disappears, random mini-dormancies are the norm (even in the greenhouse)--the succulent surface rhizomes will soon produce a new set of its remarkably beautiful leaves when its environment improves. If you need positive feedback on your prowess as a beginning Begonia grower, this is not a good selection for your first, second or third subject--once your growing skills are honed, try the ever tempting "Iron Cross," otherwise, you might consider yourself as nailed to a very stiff challenge.

56778 BEGONIA MAURICE AMEY [HYB] BEG TGH HP PRICE: $ 10.00 (c) Beautifully silvery speckled "Angelwing" leaves with a definite pink nacre complement the clusters of pink blossoms usually appearing late winter.

56367 BEGONIA MAX GOLD BEG HP TGH PRICE: $5.50 Pert tuffets of cheerful rusty chocolate velour leaves blotched with bright basil green and avacado, brilliant with the deep ruby leaf reverse; topped with arrays of white flowers in late winter.

56216 BEGONIA MIDNIGHT SUN BEG TGH HP PRICE: $ 9.50 (rz) Remarkable new wide leaves emerge pink, red beneath, then fade to rich bronze; white flowers. Impressive colored Logee introduction never surpassed in its class. This is slow to propapate, so we have listed this as "Propagate To Order." There may be a delay in shipping at some times during the year.

56306 BEGONIA MIRAGE [HYB] BEG TGH HP PRICE: $ 4.25 (rz) Dappled silver surfaces with pinkish tones highlighted by attractive gray green veins. Vigorous growing habit for such a highly colored hybrid.

56342 BEGONIA MOROCCO [HYB] BEG HP TGH PRICE: $ 6.75 Big quilted bronze leaves--similar to 'Orococo' as to leaf color, but larger more textured and patterned leaves on heavier more upright succulent stems with a scandent (climbing) habit if given a moss pole. Without support, this beauty will dramatically cascade--and more successfuly than the much larger statured 'Art Hodes.' A magnificant strong choice for the outdoor windowbox for the summer as is strongly statured to easily deal with sun, wind, and rainstorms. (Rather seems--after such a description-- as if we are constantly impressed by this performer?)

56736 BEGONIA MINIPERBA [HYB] [HYB] BEG HP TGH PRICE: $ 5.50 (c/sh) Closely clustering arched stems of great delicacy; leaves striped and/or stippled white and gray green--sometimes frosted. A graceful modestly statured classic still popular as a pot plant. .

56362 BEGONIA MRS. HASHIMOTO [HYB] BEG HP TGH PRICE: $ 6.00 (c) Wavy margined cheerful green angelwing leaves on somewhat frail drooping canes; large clusters of shell pink flowers produced during most seasons as long as extended periods of high temperatures are avoided. Frail appearance, but actually a moderately vigorous cane hybrid, among the easiest to bloom.

56714 BEGONIA MULLED MULBERRY [HYB] BEG HP TGH PRICE: $ 4.00 (sh/rex) Heavy, eventually upward bound stems thickly ranked with waxy deep mulberry/mahogany stained leaves (with an open ramshorn, open helix outline) dramatically pale veined and blushed mulled rum red beneath; pinkish flowers. Seems to appear under random names--probably because as it is such a reliable performer with good visual appeal and thus has been added to various nurseries' production lines with little research into nomenclatue--seems, for exampe, similar to 'Lauderdale Lakes'.

56763 BEGONIA NEEDHAM BEG HP TGH PRICE: $ 6.50(rz) Bold rounded leaves with emerging wheel-spoke patterns diffusing as the leaf grows into its considerable girth, still carrying a rose blush beneath. Impressive wide and low bold habit.

56086 BEGONIA NELUMBIIFOLIA BEG HP CGH PRICE: $ 6.50 (rz) Large "Waterlily Begonia." pad leaves; but peltate and cupped more like aquatic lotus foliage; an extremely rugged species (native from Mexico through northern South Amerca) forming a perfect mounded hemisphere of outfacing basil green radar dish shaped leaves springing from a short upright nearly caudex rhizome (helpful for regeneration should your watering schedule be less than ideal); tiny pink-veined white blossoms on ornately branched cymes appear in spring. 56088 BEGONIA ODORATA ALBA BEG HP CGH PRICE: $ 4.75 Sprays of small white fragrant flowers; glossy ovate leaves spaced on a big boned gal of a specimen plant. Needs elbow room to flourish, but the subtle sweet scents are ample payment from this Caribbean shrub.

56223 BEGONIA OROCOCO [HYB] BEG HP TGH PRICE: $ 4.00 (scandent) Coppery greengold subtlely shimmery leaves, slightly pebbled, edged in rusty brown, soon forming shingled brilliant ovals on cascading stems; a Worley hybrid which defines the perfect basic hanging basket subject, even tolerant of less than ideal conditions. Will always be a favorite indoors where it can become spectacular if allowed to climb (stems rooting all the way) up a moss pole to display the glossy bronzed shingled foliage to great advantage--but also, why not try it as well in your summer windowbox or patio combination urns--most certainly the "spiller" can be a thriller?

56224 BEGONIA ORPHA C. FOX BEG HP CGH PRICE: $ 4.75 (c) Slate-green leaves marked silver, maroon beneath; pink flowers.

I have talked with the person who introduced and registered this plant with the American Begonia Society. We have found out that it was introduced in 1994 (mid nineties). The plant to first introduced by Craig Walker and he named the plant after his grand daughter, Kaylen. He says that is it hardy in his area, Chattanooga, Tennessee. 58369 BRILLANTAISIA NITANS TGH PRICE: $ 8.50 Acanthus Family member according to most published "authorities." This was first introduced to garden culture, we believe, just in the last few years, especially by Landscape Environmentals, excellent source of many showy tropicals for summertime flourishes in East Coast gardens. We strongly suspect that these are the blossoms of a Mint (Labitae) when the impressive inflorescence appears--but a healthy debate continues as evidenced by the recent appearance of the common name "Giant Tropical Salvia" in some quarters. We are pleased to offer these large blooming and marvelously performing plants.
