Container plants from Koon Yam Chuk--an excellent houseplant as well as perfectly formed conservatory citizen. This may also be offered in Asia as Bambusa multiplex rivierearum 'Tiny Fern.' This price reflects starter sized clumps. Sorry, we need a bit of lead time currently to get the next set up to speed as all finished plants sold out last season.

41532 BAMBUSA VENTRICOSA GRA TGH HP PRICE: $65.00 "Buddha's Belly Bamboo" When restricted in container, this South Chinese species develops shortened, swollen internodes & small leaves. This is the real thing--due to the aggresive growth of one of the clumps growing in the greenhouse soil, we can now offer this for considerably less than in past years..

41942 BANISTERIOPSIS CAAPII MALP TGH PRICE: $ 25.00 "Ayahuasca" to Indian tribes of the western Amazon region who use its narcotic alkaloids; a strong liana with soft green pairs of leaves; tiny pink flowers. "Vine of the Souls" with complex betacarbolines.

62148 BAPHICACANTHUS CUSIA [SUIA] ACAN TGH CGH PRICE: $ 12.00 Large shrubby habit, kneed stems ranked with pairs of dusky decoratively fleshy leaves and topped with tubular lilac flowers. Robert Newman shared this important Thai herb with us. Perhaps best known as "Ma Lan Gen" in traditional Chinese medicine. Seems to demand regular warm temperatures and reliable levels of humidity to thrive.

31392 BARLERIA CRISTATA GOLD SPLASH ACAN HP TGH PRICE: $ 12.00 A fabulous form of "Philippine Violet Shrub" featuring many clustered blossoms of blue-violet combined with gold variegated leaves; from India & Burma/Myanmar. 58448 BARLERIA PINK-A-BOO ACAN HP TGH PRICE: $ 6.75 A rounded mound of upright arched stems cloaked with dark glossy leaves with modest blossom clusters emerging from each leaf node; each cute blossom a bubble gum pink. Probably a hybrid of the African B. obtusa.

49461 BARLERIA REPENS ROSEA VIOLET CASCADE ACA CGH PRICE: $ 4.00 Out arching slim stems cascade under the weight of the soft petite leaves; terminal clusters of lovely violet blossoms fading to old rose magenta. This South African reaches a peak of bloom in late fall.

BEGONIAS for the 2012 SEASON

The BEGONIAS, a genus of over a thousand species, remain unrivaled as house & conservatory plants, so much so that demand can at times outstripp our ability to keep up with several of the larger hybrids as well as unusual canes some seasons--sometimes a blog rant can create a demand for a hundred plants of one hybrid that we think of producing in half dozens most years! The codes with each entry below help you to imediately identify the overall growing habits of our offerings: (c) indicates cane-stalked "Angelwing" leaved types with typically showy pendulus clusters of blossoms, (rz) is rhizomatous with sturdy surface stems from which arise the individual leaves; (semp) abbreviates sempervirens, the "Wax Begonias," while (s) stands for shrubby branched types encompassing so many basic and traditional favorites; (t-s) indicates trailing or scandent (climbing) growth habits for baskets & topiary, and (rex) refers to the brilliantly foliaged "Rex Begonias" with their frustrating dormant spells, while (tuberous) refers to the caudiform group (not the florist/garden center winter dormant types). As this diversity can be bewildering if you do not have access to a plant handbook, fuller descriptions can be found in various of the plant books we offer for sale. If any of our stock plants remain out of propagation long enough to mature, we will start posting even more photos with our descriptions in the following lists! Please also note that we are quite outspoken about several offered below which are great favorites of Begonia growers with experience, but very difficult and most frustrating for beginners.

Meanwhile, if you'd like to start with some handsome & dependable selections, plunge in and order our BEGONIA COLLECTION as Stock #99004 to bring you some 5 named plants for a mere PRICE: $15.00. Please advise us whether you prefer Begonias for your conservatory, light garden, windowsill, terrarium, baskets, or outdoor bedding so we can pick those most likely to flourish in your specific situation. Do NOT specify specific names if ordering a collection--the selection changes nearly every week. If you want a specific species or hybrid, order it individually. We are bringing back more of our old standbys later this season--but haven't we promised this before? A number of new (to us) selections appear below, due in great part to Lee Sinoff who has contributed many amazingly massive rhizomatous types and classic canes to our mix. Various photos of specimen sized plants were taken at Baker's Acres.

And, due mainly to Tovah Martin's wonderful articles, many of you would probably like to try the ANGELWING BEGONIA COLLECTION as Stock #99686 for 5 cane types @ PRICE: $17.50 .

56001 BEGONIA ACETOSA [HYB] BEG HP TGH PRICE: $ 5.75 Velvet cupped leaves tomato red beneath; thus this Brazilian is known as the "Ruby Begonia." Texture is wonderful on this handsome plant--because it is so succulent, it tolerates much lower humidity than most, even flourishing in outdoor summer containers. While traditionally a pot subject indoors, try growing this self heading species in a hanging basket so the remarkable red underleaves are shown to advantage when viewed from below. Because of high light requirements, some consider this best as a greenhouse subject; although does well enough on a sunny windowsill.

56003 BEGONIA ACONITIFOLIA BEG HP TGH PRICE: $ 15.00(Superba cane) Silver-brushed, lobed leaves on stiftly erect thick canes with swollen caudex-like bases. Outstnding Brazilian species with shell pink (nearly white) blossoms; its slow growing nature means it is seldom available to collectors, so we attempt to always have it in stock, especially now that succulent collectors have noted its caudiform nature and astonishing appearance when carefully grown in a low bonsai pot. We inherited this clone from the late George Elbert. This is currently very overordered (sez our much cut stock plants); so be consider this a propagate-to-order plant currently.

56399 BEGONIA ALBO-PICTA [HYB] BEG HP TGH PRICE: $ 4.50 (sh) Delicate canes dressed with glossy silver-spotted leaves and greenish white flowers in profuse dangling clusters; freely branching habit.

56917 BEGONIA ANDREA [HYB] BEG TGH CGH PRICE: $ 8.00 (rex) Shimmery, glossy silver/pewter leaf surface decorated with a pink blushed color toned heart repeated on the lobed margins and highlighted by violet toned veins. Needs reliable levels of humidity at all times.

56786 BEGONIA AQUAMARINE [HYB] BEG HP TGH PRICE: $ 5.75(upright rz) Fabulously unique: thick rope rhizomes arch out under the showy lobed leaves with dramatically silver splashed midribs--giving a stained glass window effect when viewed from below. Not for the faint of heart.

56467 BEGONIA ART HODES [HYB] BEG TGH PRICE: $ 5.75 (thick stemmed/scandent] Martin Johnson hybrid with very wide fabuous pebbled leaves with pale branching veins and fine reddish hairs; unusually beautiful & unique sometimes incorrectly seen as 'Antholes.' A spectacular specimen in the conservatory, yet quite a remarkable addition to a shady summer windowbox or urn as well even though the modest clusters of white flowers typically appear only midwinter. Although quite spectacular, this is shamelessly easy to grow, tolerant of less than perfect humidity.

56734 BEGONIA AVALANCHE BEG TGH PRICE: $ 8.00 (c)Lime green leaves richly strewn with silver dots with a milky glaucous green reverse. Showy clusters of dangling pearl white blossoms at height midwinter once the clump has established. Requires considerable patience to grow this to blooming size.

56340 BEGONIA BEATRICE HADDRELL- BEG TGH PRICE: $ 4.75 (rz) Vigorous pot plant with dusky dark green and mahogany clefted leaves with central avacado starsplash and rose with magenta underleaf. Profuse shell pink winter flowered hybrid of Begonia bowerae x heracleifolia sunderbruchii--and the latter is supposedly a hybrid of ricinifolia with heracleifolia!. In the proven heirloom tribe.

56719 BEGONIA BENISUZUME BEG TGH TERR PRICE: $ 4.75(rex) Elongated deep shimmery emerald and cocoa toned leaves with fluted surface slashed with paltinum blotches; elaborate rose and carmine underleaf tones; needs constant good humidity with adequate air movement to maintain perfect foliage, any climate changes (such as shipping) typically lead to a mini snit of defoliation. Not a houseplant; definitely a Wardian case plant.

65334 BEGONIA BENITOCHIBA [HYB] BEG TGH TERR PRICE: $ 6.50 (rex) Deep nile green upturned leaves with whorled points displaying the silvery pewter overlaid patterns with purpled veins; upright habit. Although aggressively marketed currently, we find this exceedingly beautiful creature to be an imperfect houseplant as it needs very constant humidity levels, constant bright light and good air circulation to perform adequately.

56365 BEGONIA BETHLEHAM STAR [HYB] BEG TERRARIUM HP TGH PRICE: $ 5.50 (rz) Very dark satiny mahogany emerald (black) leaves with a red reverse accented by a white haired edge; very small stature with lovely pearl white flower clusters. Sturdy enough for a windowsill pot; miniature enough for terrarium display.

56731 BEGONIA BIG MAC [HYB] BEG HP TGH PRICE: $ 9.50 Available now for the collector of large plants, Begonia Big Mac!! Impressive deep glossy green deeply fingered foliage supported by a thick massive rhizome. Considered massive enough to be engaged as a "Landscape Begonia" in the tropics, similar to its bruiser parent "U 1369." Looks like a steroid fed webbed Begonis thiemei with a bronzy rhubarb petiole. Take a look at the photos. Do you have room?

56739 BEGONIA BIPINNATIFIDA [HYB] BEG HP TGH PRICE: $ 9.75 "Fernleaf Begonia" Distinctive and beautiful. Multitudes of small deeply-lobed purplish blushed leaves on forests of upright stems. Astounding in a wardian case. This sometimes can be out of stock. This year we are trying to keep it more available. It cannot stand extreme heat in the summer so thus a challenge, although completely unique..

56914 BEGONIA BLACK TRUFFLES BEG TGH HP PRICE: $ 5.75 (rz) Small statured. Crinkly spirals of dark sheen with brilliant white eye; forming a tight, neat tuffet of busy foliage. Much darker than 'Hocking Bravura' with more fingered margins. A thickly foliaged candidate for your "Black Garden."

56272 BEGONIA BOB HAMM BEG HP CGH PRICE: $ 5.00 (rz) (Rhizomatous). (rz) Blanton hybrid with dark oval leathery leaves highlighted by a red central eye and slim red rims; pink blossoms in large open custers in winter. This wonderful basic hybrid is extremely tolerant of low humidity, this "Bull's Eye" is much easier to grow than the similarly colored, but smaller statured and much slower growing , Begonia conchifolia.

56008 BEGONIA BOKIT X CARRIAE III [HYB] BEG HP PRICE: $ 8.00 (rz)Vigorous Woodriff selection with double-spiraled,fluted cinnamon-barred leaves profusely flung from large rhizomes. Everyone's favorite for a dramatic specimen. This has recently been discovered by designers of summer containers for the tropics in the temperate zones craze, thus a whole new set of fans is emerging. Pun intended.

56017 BEGONIA CARAVAN CRA HP CGH HP PRICE: $ 15.00 (sh) Stout stems support richly pelted succulent leaves with a lovely pale ochre central design. Needs perfect drainge and good air movement to become the fab creature in the photos.

56341 BEGONIA CASTAWAY BEG TGH TERR PRICE: $ 6.75 (c) Very dark leaves with deep scarlet maroon reverse with very rich pink blossom clusters on out reaching initially somewhat short cane stems. Always requires considerable patience getting this mature enough to bloom.

56018 BEGONIA CATHEDRAL [HYB] BEG HP CGH PRICE: $ 10.00 (rz) "Stained Glass Begonia." Ruffled, cupped bronzy leaves with large "windows" of translucent ochre; fantastic yet vigorous growing heirloom hybrid--especially effective grown in a small hanging baskets so one can easily look through the nearly impossibly transparent windows elegantly arranged in a wide fan of oval fenestrations appearing on each fluted leaf. The favorite crested leaved Begonia of children--even children in their sixties. Amazingly easy to grow given adequate light and humidity.

56707 BEGONIA CHERRIES AND CHOCOLATE [HYB] BEG HP TGH PRICE: $ 3.75 (rex/rz) Small saturated easily grown clumping mound of beautifully marbled mahogany black leaves with pecan tones, highlighted with bright pewter brushings amplified by the dramatic cherry red underleaves. Amazingly vigorous and undemanding.

56375 BEGONIA CHUCK B. JAROS [HYB] BEG CGH PRICE: $ 4.00 (s) Large upright plant with shiny grape-shaped applegreen foliage. Unusual yet handsome specimen with winter sprays of showy antique white flowers held on red-haired stems. The stout erect canes can reach several feet if roots are free to run. Nearly impossible to kill.

56021 BEGONIA CLEOPATRA [HYB] BEG HP PRICE: $ 6.00 (rz) Profusion of nile-green maple leaves marked with maroon; sprays of midwinter shelltoned blossoms; while certainly not a showstopper (no Elizabeth Taylor), still an old reliable standby ready to ride any barge rowing by. We realize that numerous distinct plants are sold under this name--ours originated with the Thompsons.

56740 BEGONIA COMEDIAN [HYB] BEG TGH HP PRICE: $ 7.00 (rz) Black heart-shaped whirlpool leaves--a helix with personality. Fabulous hue and textured furl. Heavy heads of white flowers. Low profile habit; foliage held more out than up.

56022 BEGONIA CONCHIFOLIA RUBRIMACULATA BEG HP CGH PRICE: $ 6.50 (rz) "Red Spot Begonia" signifies red sinus at the heart of each thick jadelike glossy cupped leaf. Low statured and somewhat succulent in nature; late winter brings delicate sprays of pink blushed white flowers. Tolerates low humidity but requires bright conditions. Due to its extremely deliberate rate of growth, this can become a propagate-to-order item if overordered. For a similar look, try the easily grown 'Bob Hamm' which has a commendable lack of cultural quirks.

56023 BEGONIA CONCORD [HYB] BEG HP PRICE: $4.00 (s,c) Glossy winged leaves, red beneath, on cascading stems. Nearly everblooming Kartuz hybrid excellent for windowsill or larger hanging basket. One of easiest to grow, although considerably less vigorous than the similarly statured B. richmondensis purpurea, especially in a mixed planting.

56024 BEGONIA CONVOLVULACEA BEG HP CGH PRICE: $ 4.50 (trailing/scandant) The "Grape Leaf Begonia" with big glossy sharply lobed leaves shingling the scandent stems; enormous pendant flower heads in late winter are most impressive. Easy. Unmatched for a substantial hanging basket statement. Given support (does not need encouragement) this clean cut beauty can easily cover a wall or cloak a moss pole with fabulous shingled glossy foliage.

56028 BEGONIA CORALLINA DE LUCERNA [HORT] [HYB] BEG HP TGH PRICE: $ 6.00 (cane) Traditional "Angel Wing Begonia" w/ deeply lobed leaves dotted silver; pendulous salmon rose flower clusters. 56898 BEGONIA CORIACEAE [HORT] BEG HP CGH PRICE: $ 10.00 (s/c) Easy houseplant as quite succulent; the thick, arching stems are packed with shiny, slightly cupped dark olive waxy leaves with showy tomentose reverse displayed on the compact tightly foliaged habit; out arched white flower clusters.

56797 BEGONIA COWARDLY LION [HYB] BEG HP TGH PRICE: $ 8.50 (rz) Big and bold, tolerating considerable neglect as long a adequate light is given to maintain that yellow copper dusky gold leaf to emphasized by darker veins--deep spirals with a 'Lopse II' texture. Showy white flower clusters. Certainly earns the space it demands.

56276 BEGONIA CRASSICAULIS U0674 BEG TGH PRICE: $ 5.50 (thick-stemmed) Impressive stout thick upright stems hold large sharply lobed deciduous leaves; enormous sprays of tiny flowers appear in late winter to break dormancy. This astounding species holds great interest to caudiform collectors as well. We are always impressed with the continued popularity of this big boy.

56025 BEGONIA CRESTABRUCHII [HYB] PRICE: $ 18.00 (rz) Giant crested bright green leaves form spectacular mounds. The ultimate begonian's magnificent obsession. An impressive extravagance demanding space, good light, adequate humidity--if you do not have adequate conditions to accomodate this, do NOT order it. Frieling's smaller statured hybrid of this, 'Hocking Hustler,' is much easier to grow with equal amounts of ruffling.

56026 BEGONIA CUBENSIS BEG HP CGH PRICE: $8.75 (fr,s) Prim ranks of small waxy blue-green leaves on dimunitive upright, somewhat woody stems; lovely Cuban species often called the "Holly Leaf Begonia." The erect woody dark stems & small waxy platinum toned foliage make this an obvious candidate for a glazed bonsai pot. Small featured petite shrublet with very slow growth rate.

56027 BEGONIA CURLY FASCINATION [HYB] BEG TGH CGH PRICE: $ 6.25 (rz) Silver-splashed, olive crinkly leaves in wide beautiful spirals held low. Sport of 'Fascination' originating here at the Glasshouse Works. Requires even humidity to flourish.

56188BEGONIA CURLY FIREFLUSH [HYB] BEG CGH PRICE: $ 8.50 Available again in 2012. (rex) Dark green leaves edged blackish chocolate; the dramatic spiraled leaves are richly haired umbber; pearl white flowers are claimed to be fragrant -- a trait we feel is best judged by the nose of the beholder. Must have high humidity: therefore, a wardian case is perfect. Seems to prefer cool winter to prevent severe defoliation--while most beautiful, always a challenge to grow perfectly. Best to start with easier Rex cultorums and the gradually build up to growing this beauty.

56912 BEGONIA DECO DADDY [HYB] BEG HP TGH PRICE: $ 5.75 (rz) Dependable eye candy with deeply cut basil green leaves decorated with deco designed heiroglyphs of mahogany red. The pseudo-fenestrated leaves form a double helix as the clump matures.

56910 BEGONIA DEJA THORUS BEG TERR CGH PRICE: $ 6.50 (rz) Fabluous silver nacre leaves with elegantly frilled and fluted margins. Great in a Wardian Case. You get ten extra points if you get the name reference.

56032 BEGONIA DIETRICHIANA BEG HP TGH PRICE: $ 4.50 (s) Slate green leaves rimmed red & backed in rose on upright branches; very soft pink blossoms--certainly one of the most reliable heirloom Begonias.

56526 BEGONIA DRAGONWING [HYB] BEG HP TGH PRICE: $ 4.50 (shrub) This is a large statured heat tolerant seed strain selection with unusually large scarlet flower clusters emerging from arched stems studded with cheerful wing shaped foliage.Much used in summertime outdoor planters (and often appearing at nurseries specializing in spring bedding plants); of limited value as a windowsill subject as becomes quite leggy without full sun..

56289 BEGONIA EARL-EE-BEE [HYB] BEG HP TGH PRICE: $ 4.00 (upright rz) Palm-like olive green leaves with blush beneath arise from a thick surface rhizome; green toned white blossom clusters all spring. Larger and greener than B. thiemei; but much smaller than "Big Mac."

56706 BEGONIA ECHINOSEPALA BEG HP TGH PRICE: $ 4.25 Marvelous shrubby Brazilian species with glossy slim leaves closely held to give a ferny delicate effect; the look enhanced by many dangling white flowers accented by odd white hairs on the backs of the tepals. Of easy culture, adding a lovely willowy whispy accent to any collection of Begonias. Popular with hobbyists as the arching erect stems tightly cluster to mimic a grove of delicate bamboo.

56700 BEGONIA ELDORABEG HP TGH PRICE: $ 7.25 (c) The "Giant Angelwing" with strong erect then arching canes supporting the silver spotted angular foliage and clusters of pale pink flowers. Demands strong light & elbowroom as this bruiser will become a major shrub in time. Typically achieves considerable stature before initiates any blooming cycle.

56037 BEGONIA ERYTHROPHYLLA [HYB] BEG HP GHP PRICE: $ 5.00 (rz) "Beefsteak Beg." Waxy lurtrous kidney shaped rounded leaves reddish beneath. Easy and reliable and beautiful AND the one probably flourishing on your grandmother's windowsill. This most ordered of all the Begonias we offer is an heirloom hybrid of the Mexican species manicata x hydrocotifolia.

56038 BEGONIA ERYTHROPHYLLA HELIX BEG HP CGH PRICE: $ 10.00 "Whirlpool Begonia" "Ramshorn Beefsteak Begonia" Both ends of the leaf spiral inward to suggest mirrored corkscrews and highlight the red underside; unusual yet vigorous specimen. Heirloom favorite.

56701 BEGONIA ESCARGOT BEG TGH TERR PRICE: $ 6.75 [rex] Large whorled leaves in chocolate, champagne, silver and pewter tones. Needs high humidity and very even temperatures so that a large terrarium would make the perfect home. Sold with PPAF tag. A highly promoted "rex" type which, while stunningly beautiful, constitutes a considerable challenge to growers not familiar with the "rex" tribe's demand for constant adequate humidity, perfect drainage in very fibrous mixes, and bright indirect lighting; as with most of this tribe, a mid summer and a mid winter "rest" is typical behavior with potential radical loss of foliage, soon replaced with a new flush of growth within a month or so. We emphatically do not recommend this challenging (though fabulously beautiful) Begonia as the first Begonia you have ever tried to grow!

56039 BEGONIA ESSIE HUNT [HYB] BEG HP CGH PRICE: $ 8.50 "Red-veined Lettuce Leaf" or "Ruby Crinkles Begonia." Fresh glossy green leaves with criped edges and rayed reddish veins. Blanto hybrid with pink spring flowers; large statured heirloom hybrid demanding good humidity and bright conditions.

56040 BEGONIA FAGIFOLIA BEG HP CGH PRICE: $ 2.50 (trailing/ scandent) Pebbly felted shiny leaves clasp meandering stems are easy to train on sphagnum topiary forms; yet, equally dramatic as a small hanging basket subject as it retains its shingled foliage well. The demure "Beechleaf Begonia" (for the genus Fagus) produces flower clusters of white, typically late winter.

56916 BEGONIA FAIRY (rex) BEG HP PRICE: $ 8.50 (rex) Somewhat upright strongly statured stems weighted with emerald green veined silvery glazed leaves, blush rose beneath. Quite beautiful Heirloom Rex far less demanding than many of this tribe. Strong grower.

56045 BEGONIA FOLIOSA BEG HP CGH PRICE: $4.75 (s) "Fernleaf Beg." Curtains of tiny oval leaves; pendant flowers. With time will assume a vase like fountain outline of astounding elegance. Be careful not to overpot or overwater.

56796BEGONIA FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH [HYB] BEG TGH HP PRICE: $ 10.00 (c) Stout stalks, cinnamon speckled, hold impressive "Angel Wing" leaves with bold silver dots.

56305 BEGONIA FROSTY FAIRYLAND [HYB] BEG HP CGH PRICE: $ 4.00 (rz) Very thick rhizomes topped with large handsomely furled coppery toned "lettuce leaf" foliage flamboyantly waved and crested. Of quite sturdy constitution , successful in the windowsill garden. Considered more vigorous and definitely larger than "Twisted Roundabout," though of close coloration.

56048 BEGONIA FUCHSIOIDES [HYB] BEG HP TGH PRICE: $ 4.75 Fern mimic with drooping clusters of rose red blossoms (and thus a Fuchsia mimic), usually mid winter. This splendid species resents changes of environment--once you have successfully placed it: leave it there! Larger statured and glossier than B. foliosa with which it is sometimes confused in the trade.

56285 BEGONIA GINNY [HYB] BEG HP TGH PRICE: $ 3.00 (s) Small featured shrubby hybrid with pink-toned fabuously felted wing-shaped leaves, rouged a flirtin' red beneath; recurring pearl fading to pale pink flowers with red beards, the male flowers somewhat serrate edged; forms a tight cluster of short stems beautifully foliaged, given good light and organic fertilizer. The attractively haired foliage allows this to acclimate to less humid conditions than tolerated by most Beonias. A great one to start with as positive feedback is constant! Perfect potplant on any windowsill; and always a gift that survives.

56050 BEGONIA GLABRA BEG HP CGH PRICE: $ 4.00 (trailing/scandent) "Mini Grapeleaf" glossy grass-green leaves on strong scandant vine terminating in clusters of shell pink flowers. Also offered as B. procumbens on West Coast (we do sometimes offer the true rose flowered procumbens/limmingheana in this listing below). This brightly cheerful winner readily forms clinging hair roots along its stems and happily clings to and covers even a concrete wall with shingled waxy leaves accented in late winter with outarched blossom clusters; thus, very popular as a solid cover for mossed topiary forms. Alternately, an interesting small foliaged vine cascading from a hanging basket or windowbox.

Gladys_Meyer1.jpg" alt="" width="75" height="75" border="1"> Gladys_Meyer2.jpg" alt="" width="75" height="75" border="1"> 56324 BEGONIA GLADYS MEYER [HYB] BEG HP TGH PRICE: $ 7.75 (rz) Dark velvety Sherwood green leaves, nicely lobed, with maroon red undersides. Very showy Tropp hybrid with masses of white flower clusters mid winter.

Remember that this drops all foliage early fall and remains dormant throughout the winter.

56257 BEGONIA GRANDIS EVANSIANA ALBA BEG CGH HT PRICE: $ 6.00 (tuberous). The lovely bronzed foliage topped with white flowers sometimes fading to shell pink. Not as vigorous as the pink flowered form. If at all stressed, will skip blooming.

56054 BEGONIA GREY FEATHER [HYB] BEG HP CGH PRICE: $ 5.75 (s) Wavy gray-green arrow leaves veined silver-gray; a favorite for pots or for very large dramatic baskets, as the rangy stalks ornately topple from the sheer foliar weight. Quite distinctive habit and unique glabrous toned color.

56055 BEGONIA HATACOA SILVER [HYB] BEG HP TGH PRICE: $ 4.75 Short arched stems plumed with metallic silvery long tapered leaves, red beneath. Platinum beauty with demure white blossoms: The "Himalayan Silver Begonia." Easily grown in the windowsill garden, small enough for a large terrarium. Tends to favor a late fall rest if too dry (humiditywise) to too cool, but re-emerges from surface tubular rhizomes late winter with great vigor and new blooms (does not reliably bloom if kept in leaf).

56885 BEGONIA HATACHROA RUBRO-VENIA [SPEICES FORM] BEG TGH TERR PRICE: $ 6.25 (sh/caudex)Lovely small statured "Spotted Himalayan Begonia" with short stems displaying silvery lime leaves with polka dots; white demure blossoms. May rest if summer heat is severe.

This is available from time to time--always available unless yet another blog declares it the most fab of the rococo period. Fabulous platinum silver leaves trumpet erectly with flourishes of crested ruffles; best in cool conditions. Famous Shigemi hybrid.

HOCKING series BEGONIAS for the 2012 SEASON

The "Hocking Series" of rhizomatous (for the most part) Begonias made here at the Glasshouse Works refers to the name of the river flowing by Stewart a block from the gardens and greenhouses here. We are always honored and parentally amused to hear that these summer heat tolerant hybirds (ideal for the Midwest) are not only successful in hobbyists' collections, but are also placing well in various plant show competitions. We tend to always maintain some of the most popular and well known "established" hybrids (such as 'Hocking Bravura,' 'Hillbilly Petticoat,' 'Hocking Flourish,' and 'Ken's Kandy' ) while others, both old standbys and their newly named progeny, arrive and disappear, then reappear with random regularity. Many are currently in the wings for future offerings--we know many of you will enjoy joining us for their evaluations as some obvious showoffs join the current lineup (such as "Hillbilly Petticoat" and 'Hocking Tutu Terror' so popular with our walk-in customers past seasons) while others wait in the wings.
