53714 ALTERNANTHERA FICOIDEA BETTZICKIANA RED THREAD AMAR HP TGH PRICE: $ 3.25 Excellent tuffets of slim scarlet purple thread leaves--very attractive, yet easy container plant. Perhaps the most popular of the tribe with our customers as it lends itself unstintingly to a myriad of necessary design tasks from topiaries to urns, from windowsill pots to summer rockery covers for dormant spring bulbs, from windowboxes to Wardian cases. It is there to do the job.

56545ALTERNANTHERA FICOIDEA BETTZICKIANA GOLD THREAD AMA TGH PRICE: $ 4.00 Marvelous tuffet of very slim yellow leaves--the "Golden Calico Plant" makes a perfect windowsill pot plant, an excellent addition to the small windowbox or urn; even a wonderful "dot" plant for the small scale summer border, or for hiding that blank space in your rockery left by dormant spring bulbs.

51710 ALTERNANTHERA PURPLE KNIGHT [HORT] ARAM TGH PRICE: $ 4.00 Low spreading (or cascading) carpet of glossy crisped wide leaves of metallic purplish tones. Quite attractive combined with container or windowbox groupings. Popular for rich color and rapid growth rate.

56719 BEGONIA BENISUZUME BEG TGH TERR PRICE: $ 4.75(rex) Elongated deep shimmery emerald and cocoa toned leaves with fluted surface slashed with paltinum blotches; elaborate rose and carmine underleaf tones; needs constant good humidity with adequate air movement to maintain perfect foliage, any climate changes (such as shipping) typically lead to a mini snit of defoliation. Not a houseplant; definitely a Wardian case plant.

65334 BEGONIA BENITOCHIBA [HYB] BEG TGH TERR PRICE: $ 6.50 (rex) Deep nile green upturned leaves with whorled points displaying the silvery pewter overlaid patterns with purpled veins; upright habit. Although aggressively marketed currently, we find this exceedingly beautiful creature to be an imperfect houseplant as it needs very constant humidity levels, constant bright light and good air circulation to perform adequately.

56707 BEGONIA CHERRIES AND CHOCOLATE [HYB] BEG HP TGH PRICE: $ 3.75 (rex/rz) Small saturated easily grown clumping mound of beautifully marbled mahogany black leaves with pecan tones, highlighted with bright pewter brushings amplified by the dramatic cherry red underleaves. Amazingly vigorous and undemanding.

56023 BEGONIA CONCORD [HYB] BEG HP PRICE: $4.00 (s,c) Glossy winged leaves, red beneath, on cascading stems. Nearly everblooming Kartuz hybrid excellent for windowsill or larger hanging basket. One of easiest to grow, although considerably less vigorous than the similarly statured B. richmondensis purpurea, especially in a mixed planting.

56710 BEGONIA HOCKING WINK BEG HP TGH PRICE: $ 6.75 (rz) Endearingly pelted (haired) small spiraled leaves of dark mahogany green with pale honeydew toned radiating veins; compact habit with stems bending under clusters of soft pink winter blossoms. Ken Frieling hybird from 'Hocking Shockwave.'

56751 BEGONIA PLUM GORGEOUS [HYB] BEG TGH PRICE: $ 5.25 (rz) Rounded cut edged leaves reaching impressive dimensions becoming a showstopper because the dark maroon-cocoa leaves are held at an upright angle emphasizing the sangria red rouged underleaf & petiole. Clusters of pink blossoms late winter. This makes a statement--designers are now quite successfully adding this to summer containers with considerable success as the colors are plum pure and the texture is windproof..

40081 BREYNIA DISTICHA ROSEO-PICTA EUP TGH PRICE: $ 12.50 Called the "Foliage Flower Shrub" because of the white, pink emerald & purple oval leaves. True fls are tiny green suction cup-shaped strands hidden beneath. This clone holds foliage if kept warm, not deciduous like Florida hedge types.

66889 CANNA AUSTRALIA [FEURZAUBER] CAN TGH PRICE: $ 18.00 Semi-aquatic "Feurzauber" forms a tight tall 5'+ clump of very stunning burgundy black leaves topped by petite scarlet (fading to salmon) flowers. Does well as bog or container subject (especially as does not go dormant), maintaining dramatic burnished chestnut foliar color even in high shade. Outstanding in the summer bed to enhance the golden foliar colors of such as Canna 'Bengal Tiger.' Originated at the Podgora Gardens, New Zealand.

41952 CANNA INDICA PURPUREA / RED STRIPE [GREENLINE] CAN TGH PRICE: $ 18.00 Remarkable strong clean avacado green leaves with strong deep purplish red parallel chevroned veins suggesting a delicate transparency. Marvelous when grown as a bog subject. Try at the edge of your pool where, if content, it can reach a height of eight feet topped with a cluster of petite brilliantly carmine red blossoms.

41761 CHAMAEDOREA METALICA PAL HP CGH PRICE: $ 6.50 Mexican "Metalic Palm" with deep blue-green leaves with odd metalic sheen accentuated by beging fused (very occasionally pinnate) fo form an upward cup. Black fruite. Price reflects at this time young seedlings.

Beautiful dusky foliage richly margined ivory with blushed violet underleaf. Excellent conservatory subject and quite popular as a summer urn subject.

50564 COLEUS HYBRIDUS APOCALYPSE LAB TGH HP PRICE: $ 4.00 Yet more drama from Frieling: A big dark tower of wide thick substanced deep chocolate velour leaves (closely packed like a stack of shingles) widely flared with violet veins and with dramatic ginseng green cut margin. So far blooms abort (this is a good thing for garden designers); seems to tolerate fall chill far better than most. This has become a basic due to its resistence to wind.

55660 COLEUS HYBRIDUS BLACK MAGIC LAB CGH PRICE: $ 4.00 Modestly statured upright habit with mahogany purple dragon leaves beautifuly outlined in avacado margined scallops, repeated with lime encircled central raised medalion. Very reliable; always popular sturdy grower (even though not very black!) whether used in bedding, urns, or a windowsill pot.One of the reliable ones with an on-going fan club.

32504 COLEUS HYBRIDUS BLACK NIGHT LAB TGH PRICE: $ 3.75 Widely fingered pine green leaves (somewhat fragile in substance) with purplish maroon designs surrounding the central raised medallion veined violet. A hopeful, not descriptive, name.

55633 COLEUS HYBRIDUS DARK STAR LAB GH PRICE: $ 4.50 The darkest of all the so-called black coleus we sell. Blackish purple wide leaves closely spaced on self branching ebony-violet stems. For the "Black Garden"; very flat foliage with only slight ruffling. Deservedly popular despite its somewhat squat slow growing nature. Not as tall nor as vigorous as the ruffly 'Othello.'

66838 COLEUS HYBRIDUS KRISPY KRITTER LAB TGH HP PRICE: $ 6.00 A rich black maroon Lohman creation with more compact & far deeper 3-d ruffles than 'Othello.' Showy spires of violet fl early winter for a windowsill show. Extremely popular over-the-top fastigate hybrid. Quite remarkable presence. Glad to report that this extremely slow growing greenhouse must is back in stock.

66733 COLEUS HYBRIDUS OTHELLO LAB CGH PRICE: $ 3.75 Deep purple black leaves richly fluted, ruffled and waffled; tightly stacked on stout eggplant toned upright stems which self branch to achieve an open pyramidal habit. The most vigorous and most satisfactory of the blackish purple hybrids for outdoor container use, bedding reliability and even good color saturation in the winter greenhouse display. Need black? Think Shakespeare.

41093 COLEUS HYBRIDUS PURPLE EMPEROR [HYB] LAB CGH HP PRICE: $ 5.50 Highly fluted, crested solid black-purple foliage. This is the traditional classic for black foliaged standards because very seldom branches at all. For wide branching foliage of this color, see 'Othello' and 'Dark Star' which do not require staking; a more vigorous sport is 'Plum Frost,' offered above. But for you purists out there, this is the original, and it is grand.

33106 COLOCASIA ESCULENTA BLACK MAGIC MINI ARAC TGH TP PRICE: $ 10.00 Miniature form of "Black Magic." Newly available compact form which seems to hold winter foliage successfully.

30606 COLOCASIA ESCULENTA ILLUSTRIS ARAC CGH PRICE: $ 12.00 "Imperial Taro" Soft shimmery heart shaped leaves with purple brushings between the veins. Semiaquatic conditions best.

39184 COLOCASIA ESCULENTA JET BLACK WONDER [ETC.] ARAC CGH PRICE: $ 15.00(The correct original name is C. jenkensii 'Uahiapele') THE solidly dusky deep purple leaved taro creating a sensation in the garden & conservatory alike; also sold as 'Cranberry,' & 'Black Magic.' Very happy as a semi-aquatic--will maintain foliage readily in the warm winter greenhouse as long as it is given consistently wet warm feet.

31254COLOCASIA ESCULENTA VIOLET/PURPLE STEM ARAC TGH CGH PRICE: $8.00. Dusky purple blushed dramatic arrow shaped leaves held over the showy smoky purple petioles; excellent in water gardens as well as regular containers. Prefers to go dormant mid-winter, even in greenhouse situations.

65668 CORDYLINE AUSTRALIS ATROPURPUREA LIL CGH HP PRICE: $ 5.00 The "Bronze Australian Sword" or more likely, the "False Red Dracaena" with stout decorative stems crowded by elegant clumps of stiff dramatically arching spike leaves toned pinkish bronze in full sun. A fabulous color version of the spiked "Lily Grass" traditionally used in summer urns. With age will become a fountain of dusky bronzed purple atop a woody trunk. So use for a summer urn and abandon to the frost gods or rescue for a winter houseplant.

53009 COSTUS FOSTER GARDENS [SPECIES] ZIN TGH HP PRICE: $ 8.50 Unidentified species with bamboo-like stalks with rich green veined, semi-succulent leaves with glossy purple-maroon under-sides; with maturity, taller stems produce terminal cone-like terminal heads of rich salmon blossoms with curious coral patterns. Related to C. erythrophyllus?

51209 CRINUM AMABILE PURPLE SELECTION AMARY TGH PRICE: $ 18.00 "Giant Red Spider Lily" Broad fleshy upright leaves emerge a rich purplish maroon in a massive whorl gradually fading to coppery violet; the heavy trunk supports giant stalks of richly fragrant violet toned blossom clusters. Impressive! While excellent as a container subject with silvered or golden foliaged plants, this foliar sculpture reaches an impressive performance peak when treated as a bog plant in full sun.

52092 CRYPTBERGIA RUBRA [HYB] BRO HP TGH PRICE: $ 5.50 Beautiful pot plant of dark maroon-red laquered curved leaves tightly overlapping to form fountains of moderate size, backed with silver tones. Hyb of C. bahianus x Bilbergia nutans. Recommended. Low growing heirloom bromel always reliable as an easily grown houseplant. A great plant choice to jump start your investigation of the Bromeliad tribe.

40166 CTENANTHE OPPENHEIMIANA TRICOLOR LAB TGH PRICE: $ 10.00 "Never-Never Plants" Lanceolate leaves slashed with cream, silver, gray, pink & moss-green; flaunts the wine red reverse backside as the leaves are held upright in ever offsetting broad fans of foliage. Similar to the Stromanthe sanguinea Tricolor offered elsewhere on this site, but taller and more highly variegated--much rarer in the nursery trade.

82002 DIANTHUS CARYOPHYLLUS KING OF THE BLACKS CAR HH CGH HT PRICE: $ 4.25 "Trailing Clove Carnation" fragrant purple blackish red blossoms over compactly statured gray foliage cascading in time from your baskets of windowboxes. Strong performer in the sunny winter greenhouse.

54338 DODONAEA VISCOSA PURPUREA SAP HH CGH PRICE: $ 4.75 Attractive "Purple Hop Bush" forms a dense upright shrub w/ resinous woody branches covered w/ upfacing leathery willow like bronzy purple leaves turning dusky copper in lower light intensities; clusters of white fls, then reddish winged seed capsules used as hops by Arizona settlers. Maybe. Actually native to the South Pacific. A beautifully foliaged subtropical in northern climes; an engaging shrub in the lower end of the subtropics; easily grown in a container. To see this is to want it, even if you do not currently brew bizarre beers.

40650 MUSA [ENSETE] MAURELII MUS TGH CGH PRICE: $ 28.00 "Abyssinian Black Banana" While having the thick heavy substance of M. ventricosa, the blackish red leaves flaunt mahogany midribs and margins; purple-carmine underleaf is revealed as leaf unfurls; red-bracted inflorescenceorescence. This is the astounding giant we keep at the patio-pond area here every summer. Come fall the foliage is removed and the tub is carted off into the unheated (but never freezing) porch for the winter where it always unfurls several dramatic bronze leaves for tropical drama while the snow falls outside. If you watch PBS's series on Africa, note stands of this banana around the Eritrean villages where the natives use every part of this plant in their economy. In our experience, this never offsets--the most ordered ornamental form currently as its photo seems to (quite deservedly) crop up in magazines everywhere. Certainly the most easily grown of all the tribe as a container plant--but be sure not to pot in a deep container as the roots grow more outward than directly down.

65640 EUCOMIS COMOSA SPARKLING BURGUNDY [OAKHURST] LIL HH CGH PRICE: $ 10.00 The lovely "Purple Pineapple Lily" with somewhat succulent burgundy foliage forming a wide succulent rosette from which arise the distinctive greenish white flowers closely packed on a long succulent spike lasting months (typically topped with a bizarre topknot of leaflets, thus resembling a pineapple); remember that this needs a slight winter dormancy even if grown in a greenhouse pot. Hardy outdoors here (usually) if planted deeply and mulched thickly; more reliably hardy in the deep south.

67423 EUPHORBIA COTINIFOLIA ATROPURPUREA EUP TGH PRICE: $ 10.00 "Hierba Mala" or "Tropical Purple Smoketree" Elegant branching stems of purple with whorls of thin ovate leaves of wine red fading to metallic magenta with red veins; whitish inflorescence more odd than decorative. Excellent large accent plant, newly popular in large summer urn designs; Remember that (as with various spurge saps) this is a traditional Caribbean fish stunning poison--do not locate near your school of koi.

67035 EUPHORBIA FLAMELEAF (SPECIES) EUP TGH HP PRICE: $ 2.50 "Flameleaf Spurge" Multitudes of slender stems flutter with rounded diamond-shaped leaves of dusky violet fading to emerald green edges. While of delicate appearance, actually a very easy-to-grow houseplant, marvelous under lights. Amazon native. Absolutely excellent when added to outdoor summer urns, windowboxes and even to Hosta beds as the dusky purple small featured foliage makes any companion plant more special--especially successful when paired with Euphorbia 'Diamond Dust'.

67106 EUPHORBIA TRIGONA RED LEAF EUP PRICE: $ 5.00 "Red Milk Bush" Easily grown cultivar of this upright three sided trunked , side branching basic, but with the added attraction of beautiful red foliage when grown in bright light. The entire stem also turns purplish-red in high light.

40257 EXCOECARIA COCHINCHINENSIS EUP HP TGH PRICE: $ 10.00 "Chinese Croton" Pairs of beautiful shiny leaves deep green on top, a brilliant laquered red beneath elegantly presented on arching woody maroon stems. Outstanding houseplant, but like many spurges, sap is toxic, and thus called "Blindness Tree" in Southeast Asia where it is commercially valuable to stun fish for easy catches (do not try this in your goldfish pond). Easy. Has long enjoyed the distinction of being the cover plant of George Elbert's large tome on foliage plants, unfortunately now out of print.

44020 FICUS ELASTICA BURGUNDY PRICE: $ 12.00 Beautiful "Purple Rubber Tree" with thick glossy cardboard leaves thickly spaced on the woody central stem. Tolerates low humidity.

53195 FITTONIA VERSCHAFFELTII FRANKIE ACA HP TERR PRICE: $ 6.75 Well, "Of All the Nerve Plants" with stunning new leaves emerging pale baby bottom pink crimp edged in emerald green, the foliage gradually maturing to green with mosaic veins--must have humidity to survive. 52108 FOSTERELLA VILLOSULA BRO HP TGHPRICE: $ 5.75 Bolivian with succulent purplish leaves in flattened starburst rosettes from which rise the wands of flowers; a colorful small Bromeliad tolerating lower light while maintaining its sophisticated coloration. Interesting successful windowsill potplant easily transferred to a starring role in any Wardian case.

40326 GYNURA BICOLOR COMP HP CGH PRICE: $ 4.25 Prostrate stems with deep velour leaves, purple beneath, from swollen root surface; Underated species from the Molluccas excellent in wintertime greenhouse baskets; equally at home cascading from windowboxes or urns in your summertime outdoor plantings. As eager and willing to grow and impress as aurantiaca is willing to disappoint! Too many extra trimmings or cuttings? Don't toss as herbalists consider this species to be a good source of vitamens and "other" nutrients.

40327 GYNURA SARMENTOSA [HORT] COMP HP CGH PRICE: $ 3.50 "Purple Passion Vine" Succulent jagged leaves carpeted with rich purple hair on gracefully arching or (if given a mossed pole) clambering stems; All the sarmentosas need full sun to perform well..

40329 HAEMARIA DISCOLOR DAWSONIANA ORC HP TERR PRICE: $ 12.50 "Jewel Orchid" Black leaves veined in coral; fragrant cream mini-orchid fls with pinkish bracts. 50031 HEMIGRAPHIS EXOTICA VARIEGATA [HORT] ACAN HP TGH PRICE: $ 5.25 "Variegated Waffle Plant" the oval puckered metallic-purpled pairs of leaves, each with an attractively rolled margin, are splotched with straw yellow; wonderful as the furled margins reveal the wine-red underleaf. <

The excellent "Maple Leaved Mallow" with blackish purple maple shaped (sure!) deeply lobed leaves blushed red in full sun. Engaging mimic of "Mary Jane" for an erect accent in planters and urns; if a consevatory subject, expect dusky sultry wine-toned winter mallow flowers; if grown near the fence in an urban setting, expect the leaves to be regularly stripped off (and not by insects) by passersby who will smoke them later.

41842HIBISCUS ROSA-SINENSIS ROSE COOPERI MAL TGH CGH PRICE: $ 6.75 Warm rose and pink splashed foliage perfect with the mauve rose blossoms; an excellent container subject, being a much intensified version of the heirloom 'Matensis' in color and in vigor.

51295 HIPPEASTRUM SAN ANTONIO ROSE AMARYL CGH HP PRICE: $ 8.00 Compactly statured clumping Amaryllis with reddish veined violet blushed strap leaf reverses; violet pink blossom clusters. Likely overwinters in Z8 and higher as hybridizer William Bell crossed Hippeastrum aulicum stenopetalum x traubii doraniae. Perfect choice for those not comfortable with the dormant cycles of the more famous purple leaved Oxalis regnellii atropurpurea (triangularis) which tyically rests during the winter to emerge from its pot until early spring. This deserves to be more popular than it currently is--especially as it is a real trooper in sunny windowboxes and patio urns of summertime, as well as the winter windowsill.

41490 OXALIS REGNELLII ATROPURPUREA [TRIANGULARIS] OXA HP CGH PRICE: $ 4.25 Incredible "Red Velvet Shamrock"--a striking selection with handsome dusky glowing purple foliage with a central vivid violet flame on each triangular leaflet; low statured mound topped with many delicately toned lilac fls. 50523 RHOEO BERMUDENSIS [SPATHACEA NANA] COMM HP PRICE: $ 3.50 Tight multi-headed mounds of stiff short fleshy leaves blushed pinkish purple beneath, in tight whorls obscuring the stout stems.

50570 RHOEO SPATHACEAE [DISCOLOR] COMM TGH HP PRICE: $ 8.25 The large statured traditional "Moses in a Boat" or "Oyster Plant" so called for the open oyster shell shaped bracts from which peep the white spiderflowers--boat shaped bracts tucked between the thickly packed outthrust fleshy green leaves, purpled beneath. Now more correctly named Tradescantia spathaceae, but seldom so identified in any plant book or magazine article. This is the one grandma grew. We have included several pictures of a new variegated form, which may be available in a year or so. We thought you would like to see the variegated form. Not available yet. But it exists!

50059 RUELLIA AMOENA [GRAECIZANS] ACAN HP TGH PRICE: $ 1.50 "Red Christmas Pride" Purple underleaf; scarlet pouch fls. Extremely vigorous and as popular now as in Victorian times when it filled that pre-poinsettia era with red blossoms at Christmas.

41796 SACCHARUM OFFICINARUM VIOLACEUM PELE'S SMOKE GRA TGH PRICE: $ 25.00 "Purple Sugar Cane" from Polynesia makes a dramatic pot plant with long elegant purple leaves ranked on the woody segmented maroon canes--long a premire favorite for collectors with a greenhouse desiring the visual design effect of this stunning "Black Magic Repellent Plant." This is also known as Saccharum 'Pele's Smoke' in Hawaii where it is a stunning permanent bedding statement. More recently this most handsome clump of dusky purple has won over temperated zone gardners bent on bringing a tropical tone to summer plantins. And indeed, the "Purple leaved Sugar Cane" becomes amazing when brought out into a collection of potted plants on your deck or patio. Various customers plant their ever-thickening clumps directly in their summer display beds, digging these shallow rooted clustered canes in the fall to store in their plant rooms or a corner of the hobbygreenhouse until spring re-planting. Always remember to keep quite moist.

58310 SAXIFRAGA CUSCUTAEFORMIS MAROON BEAUTY SAX CGH TERR PRICE: $ 7.50 Wide low rosettes of gray green thick leaves with silvery veins and rosy ruby blush beneath. Lovely carpeting subject.

67359 SYNADENIUM GRANTII RUBRA EUP HP TGH PRICE: $4.25 "Purple Leaf Brown Jug Plant" or Tanzanian "Red Milk Bush" Thick upright woody/succulent trunk and side branches adorned with beautiful succulent leaves wine red with slight green flecking, purple beneath; red inflorescence featuring unusual bracts. 50529 TRIPOGANDRA PURPLE SCIMITARS [SP] COMM HP CGH PRICE: $ 2.50 Unidentified species originally offered as a Setcreasea. Small elongated curved stiff waxy purple leaves rigidly spaced on deep purple erect (and then toppling) fat stems; blue to violet flowers. Excellent used as an outdoor bedding foliage plant; dramatic cascading from your patio urns. Much brighter shine and deeper aubergine purple than the smaller statured (Setcreasea) "Purple Plush/ Purple Heart Plant." Sometimes this is ordered in considerable numbers for mass plantings--we need considerable warning time to accomodate large orders.

30440 XANTHOSOMA VIOLACEUM ARAC TGH HP PRICE: $ 12.00 "Blue Taro" Purple stems arch into swooping arrowhead leaves of dusky violet darkening to a rich purple toward the margins; this semi-aquatic "Blue Ape" must have warm winter conditions to maintain evergreen foliage; easiest to grow as a semi-aquatic in summer (but very successful as a container companion plant or even planted in a bed with some perfect color companion like 'Lime Zinger'): then store like a dormant "Elephant Ear" during the winter. And like all Colocasias and Xanthosomas, most successfully stored by leaving them in their containers so that their ever so slightly moist undisturbed potting mix is around them all winter to prevent drying out and rot. Nonetheless, reliably evergreen [everpurple] in your winter greenhouse or warm plantroom.

50556 ZEBRINA PENDULA PURPUSII CIN GO CGG PRICE: $ 3.25 Deep pruple foliage--the darkest we have seen--with slight silvery chevrons giving depth to the darkness. Rather smaller foliage than most cultivars.

56544 ZINGIBER MIDNIGHT ZIN TGH HP PRICE: $ 6.50 Marvelous "Black Ginger" with arched stems winged with glossy maroon overlapping leaves; the lovely blossoms open creamy yellow gradually changing to peachy apricot. Wonderful color in any plant combination, or as a solo pot plant. If the roots are slightly chilled, or if (not that this could happen) watering schedules are missed, this small ginger will drop its foliage; but never fear for a new fresh set of stems will emerge from the undersoil bulb/tuber and the color will be better than ever.
