Fig Trees and Bonsai (FICUS) for THE 2010 SEASON

The TROPICAL FIGS, unrivaled as imposing reliable houseplants, impressively trained standards or (as with the pumila group) premire topiary creepers; some members are most famous as terrarium subjects, others for windowsill containers & indoor bonsai. You may suggest that you would prefer species and hybrids appropriate for terrariums, standards, topiary, indoor gardening, bonsai, and so on--we've a wide range to select from. 5 plants @ PRICE: $22.00

Of most interest to collectors as the Moraceae are notoriously difficult to hybridize as the blossoms face the center of the enclosed protofruit available only to the designated wasp species.. Not only prized by moss topiary designers but also now discovered by Wardian Case designers looking for a taller fig which will remain small featured.

58324 FICUS MICROPHYLLA GOLDEN GATE MOR HP TGH $ 12.00 "Tiger Bark Fig" Excellent bonsai with short, branching trunk decoratively striped holding an array of small glossy bright toned leaves (not variegated). Newly published under the name of Ficus Salicaria for which information we thank Derek Burch. Very popular with the bonsai & alpine greenhouse crowds! Petite enough for a terrarium. We prefer to ship this when the temperatures are moderate for sometimes it does not travel well without considerable leaf drop--a perfectly natural plant response to seasoned plantsmen, but an unnerving crisis to those new to growing. Naturally, it immediately leafs out just like most Pelargoniums after having survived the shock of a few days in a dark box.

Also used in topiary as the flexible stems will follow the contours of any moss filled wire form or driftwood surface and the tiny leaves remain shingled on the surface. Never let this dry out or face the horrible truth of terminal dormancy.

40685 OSMANTHUS FRAGRANS OLE TGH CGH PRICE: $ 10.00 "Sweet Olive" Leathery-leaved shrub; clusters of small white flowers emit a delightful rare fragrance "blending jasmine, ripe apricots & gardenia" used in China to scent tea. Looks like a clump of giant bamboo, only this is a foot tall. A tip of the hat to Barry Yinger who shared this with us initially--it has since earned a place on the indoor windowsill, in the small scaled bog, with other ornate containers on the deck, and even in bonsai shows, having won over a number of our customers in a very short time. (We soon hope to have enough of the white striped version of this winner to offer.)

40856 PUNICA GRANATUM NANA PUN CGH HP PRICE: $ 5.00"Dwarf Pomegranate" Bright double orange flowers resembling nodding papery carnations followed by small edible fruit; very cool winter condition imperative for best production of spring blossoms--but do not allow to freeze. 11472 SELAGINELLA PLANA SEL TERR TGH PRICE: $ 4.25 Strong erect stems hold bright branched fans of shimmery foliage. Very distinctive beautiful "Spikemoss Cypress" species achieving more dramatic height than most of the tropical "Clubmosses." Certainly not "creepy." Unmatched for giving an exceptionally elegant vertical effect in a wardian case or larger terrarium; but remember that this is very tropical and thus, unlike various Selaginella species offered here, is not tolerant of chill.

Choice "Kyoto Snow Rose" used in mame bonsai as "Kyoto Kochoki"--this is the difficult one as needs higher humidity than its kith & kin; nonetheless, certainly the most impressive as a bonsai. Please note that these will be extremely small plants when they arrive at your home because this is a miniature form.

58400 SOLANUM PSEUDOCAPSICASTRUM JOKER SOL TGH CGH PRICE: $ 6.00 A definitely unique form of "Jerusalem Cherry" with dark undulant leaves topped with whitish, then striped green, then brilliantly red berries (toxic if ingested) on a wide spread short shrublet which will develop a woody base with time. The growth is so lateral and foliage reduced enough that bonsai fanciers are starting to experiment with this 'Joker.'

40945 TRACHELOSPERMUM A~ SHIROFU-CHIRIMEN APO CGH HP PRICE: $12.00 Miniature selection of the Asian "Japanese Jasmine" sports pairs of tiny oval semi-glossed leathery leaves with pinkish-cream variegation; lovely clumping, shrubby tiny vine. This is extremely extremely slow growing and thus popular for mame. Translates as "White Variegated Crepe Paper"--a long ago distribution from Longwood 770-104 (we suspect B. Yinger originally scooped this up for Longwood). This extremely slow growing miniature will require considerable patience on your part.

66780 URENA LOBATA [PROCUMBENS] ROSE NEWMAN MAL TGH HP PRICE: $ 5.25 This small shrub collection from China by Robert Newman of one of the "Asian Snowflake Mallows" sports very beautiful lobed leaves of pale ochre dramatically banded in dark green; demure lilac mini-hibiscus blossoms line the stems early winter. 54064 VITEX TRIFOLIATA VARIEGATA VER CGH PRICE: $ 15.00 The crinkled leaflets of this "Verbena Tree" are margined in clear bright white--with maturity this beautifully variegated woody slim shrub produces misty pastel lilac clusters of tiny blossoms. Native to South Asia into Australia, this striking shrub-tree performs well outdoors in the deep subtropical south; nonetheless, it also is quite striking as a container plant in the north, certainly a natural for training into a spectacular standard.

69016 WISTERIA FRUTESCENS AMETHYST FALLS LEG HH CGH PRICE: $ 8.50 Remarkable selection of our "Southern Wisteria" this quickly forms heavy bonsai-worthy sinuous trunks with ornate pinnate foliage foiling the beautiful pendant clusters of closely packed blue pea flowers on new growth (not on last season's wood like the rest). Excellent container or tub plant for the cool greenhouse; seems tol be hardy outdoors here as well. Nonetheless if you are growing this in a bonsai or ming pot, the roots should be protected from protracted freezing and thus you would need to stash your dormant Wisteria in a cool corner of your greenhouse or very deep coldframe: and that is why we list this in the tropical plant section.

40978 ZAMIA FISCHERII ZAM GH PRICE: $12.00 "Fern Leaf Zamia" or "Fish Tail Zamia" Spindle trunks with thin, leathery shiny pinnate leaves giving air of elegance. Mexican native. Often in limited numbers.

Fabulous in the greenhouse succulent collection; handsome as a sunny windowsill potplant; always popular among bonsai fanciers as the leaves remain petite and the trunk becomes more and more swollen with fascinating bark. We include several pictures of older trees in pots. These sometimes are available at about 100.00 each. Inquire.

Paired rimmed leaves on stout woody trunks; but without intense light, cool winter conditions and very limited fertilizer, the color will quite likely not develop.

Another unusual Hummel selection rarely offered as grows very slowly and deliberately--not to be confused with the similarly colored C. arborescens undulatifolia. Much prized by collectors.

60284 CRASSULA PORTULACEA CONVOLUTA GOLLUM CRA HP PRICE: $ 5.50 "Trumpet Jade" Stiff short woody trunks support tufts of bizarre leaves so fused that only a curious trumpet fish-mouth remains at the tip--rather like E.T.'s fingers! The cute name once again makes sense to customers thanks to current blockbuster films.

60285 CRASSULA PORTULACEA CONVOLUTA HOBBIT CRA HP CGH PRICE: $ 7.50 Each leaf is rolled in from the sides and nearly fused into various bizarre forms of fat unrolled cigarettes. Popular conversation piece developing a considerably different outline than that of 'Gollum.'

Certainly the most popular (and shamelessly easy to grow) of the dwarf Madagascar tribe, a number of customers have added more and more of the endlessly varied leaf forms and leaf colors to a lite garden (in which conditions the jade like waxy leaves develop astounding color saturation), to a windowsill collection (which, like the Haworthia collections) begins to look like a foliar version of a glass paperweight assemblage, or to an array of equisite low jade foliaged mounds of theme and variation in the hobby greenhouse. One of the few Euphorbia species quite at home in a terrarium. Best colors when protected from searing sunlight levels.

61002 EUPHORBIA GEROLDII EUP HP TGH CGH PRICE: $ 8.75 "Everblooming Spurge" Elegant upright branching stems are cloaked with dark toned rubbery leaves perfectly framing the rich red cyathophylls (the "blossoms") which are produced with full light, even warmth, and good fertilizer. The small dark green succulent paddle leaves stud the dividing erect woody stems as a miniature tree-like woody trunk gradually develops. Distinct and handsome (eventually reaching considerable dimensions, altho the leaves remain small), demanding only good light, adequate moisture and a shallow bonsai pot to make a statement on the succulent bonsai table.

60393 KALANCHOE HILDEBRANDTII CRA HP TGH PRICE: $5.25"Silver Teaspoons" perfect description of the platinum hair pelting the oval leaves with narrow petioles; these remarkable leaves are rigidly ranked on slim extremely erect stems (thus lending this plant new status as a unique but successful rigidly at attention topiary standard). A curiously similar habit to that of Kalanchoe peltata, whose similarly shaped rigid leaves are, of course, NOT pelted. In the West Coast wholesale trade this Madagascar native seems usually offered as K. orgyalis `Silver' (but orgyalis is a much larger statured, less symmetrically upright growing, not given to rigid right angles of growth, and a more tannish toned plant).

60408 KALANCHOE PELTATA CRA HP TGH PRICE: $ 7.00 Slim erect stems rigidly hold leaves resembling an army of (un-pelted!) tiny garden spades; topped by pink bellflowers when mature. Easy slow growing houseplant--the dependable angular plain sister of the showy flashy hildebrandii.

60604 SENECIO TUBEROSUS COMP HP CGH PRICE: $ 4.25 Elaborate several-sectioned caudiform tuberous bases send up slim stems usually toppling under the small gray leaves. A good starting point plant to see if you wish to start a collection of caudex plants for this fat daisy has no dormancy cycle, no fear of full sun or part shade, and no dilemmas over the possibly irregular watering habits of its master.

41138 THORNCROFTIA SUCCULENTA LAB HP CGH PRICE: $ 5.75 "Mint Oak" Tidy woody stems hold pelted oak-shaped leaves with delicate mint fragrance; purple flowers. Eventually develops a gnarled woody base beloved by bonsai fanciers.
